UNO well represented at CLEO/Europe - EQEC 2015 

The UNO team will be celebrating the International Year of Light by presenting eight contributions at the CLEO/Europe-EQEC Conference, taking place in June 2015 in Munich, Germany. The topics included ultrafast interaction in cascaded nonlinear crystals and waveguides, as well as linear and nonlinear properties of novel hollow-core fibers.

Mid-IR dispersive wave from a cascaded self-defocusing soliton

The UNO team has experimentally observed and characterized for the first time the mid-IR dispersive wave that laid the foundation of the Femto-midIR logo. This was published in Optics Express.

Supercontinuum generation in unpoled quadratic nonlinear waveguides

A new experiment conducted at DTU Fotonik breaks the standard consensus. For the first time efficient, octave-spanning supercontinuum generation is observed in a quadratic nonlinear waveguide without the need for periodic poling. This removes the constraints imposed by poling on the waveguide design and also promises well for nonlinear crystals where poling is inefficient or impossible.

Extreme mid-IR supercontinuum observed in a step-index chalcogenide fiber

In an experiment at DTU Fotonik recently published in Nature Photonics, an extreme mid-IR supercontinuum was observed by pumping a high-NA step-index chalcogenide fiber with 100 fs mid-IR pulses. A continuum covering nearly a decade (1.4-13.3 Microns) was observed.

Strong representation at CLEO Europe 2013 by the Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics team

At the upcoming European Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics and the International Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO/Europe-IQEC), the Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics team has 11 accepted contributions (4 oral and 7 posters).

New nonlinear wave equation enables accurate modeling of ultrashort pulses

Solving the wave equation in frequency domain gives an accurate model of ultrashort pulse interaction with few approximations. This paper was highlighted with an OSA Spotlight, and was on the top 10 most downloaded papers in February 2013 in JOSAB.

Determining the cubic nonlinear properties of BBO

This review paper presents a large leap forward in proper modeling of ultrafast interaction in the important nonlinear crystal BBO.

Few-cycle mid-IR pulses generated with cascaded nonlinearities

At the Ultafast Phenomena conference in Lausanne, Switzerland, we presented the contribution Generating Few-cycle Energetic Mid-IR Pulses with Soliton Compression by Cascaded Quadratic Nonlinearities

Cascaded compression reveals a new paradigm of ultrafast cascaded nonlinearities

A new method for compressing laser pulses overcomes power constraints that hamper current compressor technology. The method suggests a paradigm shift in ultrafast cascaded nonlinearities as for the first time octave-spanning bandwidth is achieved using the largest nonlinear components of conventional frequency conversion crystals. The utility of this process was confirmed experimentally by compressing energetic (sub-mJ) near-IR femtosecond pulses to four periods in the time domain. This happened in a just 1 mm long nonlinear crystal.
