A Ph.D. stipend including full salary is available at the Department of Photonics Engineering, Technical University of Denmark. The research envisioned in the Ph.D. project aims at exploring quantum information at the nanoscale and developing novel quantum photonic devices. Such quantum devices are central for quantum information networks, quantum computation and quantum cryptography systems, and lie at the basis of a forthcoming Quantum Internet.

The Ph.D. project is mainly experimental and focused on:

  • Exploring a robust and flexible material platform for advanced quantum devices for quantum networks, based on novel crystal-phase quantum dots in nanowires.
  • Developing the epitaxial growth of quantum structures based on multiple quantum dots in a single nanowire.
  • Optimizing these structures to realize a versatile solid-state quantum register with photonic interface (clean-room nano-fabrication of the device and its experimental demonstration).
  • Demonstration of quantum information transfer between of two (and more) quantum registers.
Our group works in a new state-of-the-art nanophotonics lab in tight collaboration with a team of quantum nanophotonics theorists and a team of nanofabrication experts. We have an effective in-house collaboration that covers all aspects of our research: theory and modeling, sample growth and fabrication, experiments and demonstrations. We have created a dynamic research environment of young and senior scientists aimed at excellent science.

Qualifications
Candidates should have obtained a master's degree in physics or electrical engineering with very good results (high GPA) and have a strong interest and ideally background in several of the following topics: nanophotonics, quantum optics, quantum information, semiconductor physics, epitaxial growth and clean-room fabrication. Candidates should have strong analytical skills and keen interest in doing experimental work.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by: Assoc. Prof. Nika Akopian and Senior Researcher Dr. Elizaveta Semenova.
