We offer a full PhD position within the topic of using silicon optical phased arrays for optical switching with low energy consumption. Optical phased arrays have attracted significant attention owing to their promising capabilities of non-mechanical optical beam forming and steering. This project is part of a Villum Young Investigator project on energy-efficient optical communications in the 2-micron wavelength range (2MAC).

The PhD project will be carried out in the High Speed Optical Communications group (HSOC) in the Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. The HSOC group is at the forefront of international research in optical communications technology and holds a number of world records in high-capacity and high-speed optical communications. There is access to state-of-the-art experimental facilities and cleanroom facilities. The HSOC group is highly international and encourages collaborative work and an informal working environment.

Project description
The PhD candidate will design and fabricate silicon optical phased arrays and use them for optical switching. 

The PhD student will explore the design and fabrication of large-scale silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs), including star couplers, energy- efficient thermal-optical phase shifters and grating based light emitters. The work will also include the characterization of the near field and far field distribution of the optical phased arrays. In particular, a novel design will be investigated to achieve densely spaced light emitters. The optical pahsed arrays will be investigated at wavelengths 1.55 µm and 2 µm.

The optical phased arrays will be used for optical beam steering and optical switching. The beam steering properties, like angular resolution, collimation characteristics, focusing and fan-out performance and extinction ratio of the beam will be characterized, in addition to measuring insertion loss and switching energy consumption Experimental demonstrations of optical switching with these arrays will be the target of the project.

As part of the Danish PhD program the student will follow a number of Ph.D. courses. Furthermore, there will be the opportunity to carry out an external research stay at another research group. We have close collaborations with numerous internationally leading universities and research organizations.

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are a must.

Approval and Enrolment 
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Only candidates with an above the average marks are accepted in the program. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
