The Technical University of Denmark invites application for a PhD project in the area of Time Sensitive Networks and applications. The project is placed within the Communication Technology Section at DTU Fotonik.  

Project description
The goal of this PhD project is to study the increasing focus on latency and delay variations in communication infrastructure driven by applications with visual content and the growing real-time M2M communication (IoT).

The project will be experimental oriented and targeting a generic platform that exploits solution of both physical and logical origin and latency parameters in the full range from nanoseconds to milliseconds.  

The main topics the researcher will tackle within the project are: 

  • Understand and formally describe physical and logical bounds in existing communication systems for example from signal propagation, signal processing and protocol interaction.
  • Identify generic areas for latency optimization and control.
  • Focus on both large scale international infrastructure and smaller scale systems such as datacenters.
  • Build experimental setup to demonstrate and document solutions for latency control and management validated by real applications, e.g. within real-time visual or M2M communication.

The candidate must have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. A solid background communication technology, protocols, network architecture, performance optimization and similar is important. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are a must.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, only candidates with an above the average marks are accepted in the program. We recommend the applicants to contact the supervisors in advance to assess the suitability of the application.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current Danish rules for Ph.D. degree researchers. The period of employment is 3 years.
